Just over a decade into its life and with plenty left to accomplish, Nexton very much fits the description of “new.” And yet we regularly hear from people that Nexton feels different from other new places. Different as in better. We believe this difference comes from intention. You see, we didn’t set out just to make room for x number of homes and dog parks and coffee shops. The whole point was to create a place that lives and moves and breathes with balance and energy and diversity. In other words, like a real town. That’s what makes Nexton Nexton.
When you approach placemaking from a holistic point of view, something special happens. You find yourself focusing not just on the ingredients — streets, homes, schools, etc. — but on how they come together. How they support each other. And perhaps above all, how the whole place makes you feel as you move through your day. Does it feel easy? Logical? Beautiful? Does it encourage healthier living by letting you walk or bike to everyday destinations? And does it energize your day with all sorts of fun places to meet, local food to eat and events to enjoy?
Everything’s here and everything’s connected. Grocery stores (yes, plural). A huge range of dining options, from morning coffee joints to everyday lunch spots to date-night destinations. Boutiques by the bushel. Parks and trails and ponds and pickleball courts. And this finely integrated diversity of place is what gives Nexton the rhythm and vibrancy of town.
EXPLORE TOWN LIFE

If you’ve explored new communities around Charleston, you may have noticed the homes often look pretty much the same from community to community. And you may have seen that, in Nexton, there’s a wider variety of home designs, which creates street scenes that evoke some of the charm and character of Charleston’s beloved older neighborhoods. That’s because we’re highly intentional in how we select and work with homebuilders. Across the board, we insist on a high level of craft. But we also choose each builder to fulfill a specific need and deliver a very particular Lowcountry aesthetic. Then we blend this variety of home styles together in thoughtful ways, giving each street and neighborhood its own unique texture.

Over the past decade or two, it’s become clear that spending time outside in the fresh air and sunshine is a very healthy thing to do. Especially for kids in today’s screen-obsessed society. So in Nexton, we’ve set aside about 30 percent of our 5,000 acres for parks, trails and nature. It’s also become clear that we humans are happiest when we gather together. Which is why Nexton offers so many places and events where we can enjoy live music, local food, an afternoon at the pool, a friendly (but fierce) game of pickleball and each other’s company.
